To demonstrate the use of literacy and numeracy demands for secondary students, I have chosen classroom music as my subject. The students are required to choose one composer from a list of five relevant composers, these being Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Haydn or Handel. I will be using scaffolding which is based on Vygotsky's sociocultural theory. I will demonstrate the task on a composer of my choosing so the students will understand what is required for the assessment. Throughout the period of the task I will provide feedback on the students work and suggest improvements when required.
The students are to work in groups of three or four and each student is to research an area of interest related to their chosen composers. The research areas may include time period, composers influences, composition style (product of their period or rule a breaker), composers life history, time signatures of the period, timeline for the history of the composer and period of works, composers who influenced the composer and did the composer (ie Mozart) influence future generations.
The objectives of this assessment are the students will be able to demonstrate the ability to comprehend and apply research to a composer and their nuances in music. The students will need to be able to recall previous research as they apply and analyze the differences between the composer and the era in which they lived. The student will demonstrate or develop the skills necessary to distinguish important information as there is an abundance of knowledge to read on all composers from which the students may chose. The student will also need to be able to demonstrate good writing skills in presenting their research in which they also are required to present in a creative manner.
The students’ numeracy skills will be shown with the construction of a timeline and depicting important dates of the composer’s life.
